Attention

What is “choosing curiosity?”

Isn’t it possible that a child could begin already with an enormous capacity for natural curiosity? Imagine that a child hears a brief and unfamiliar sound. The sound could be only loud enough to startle the child to bring complete attention to that sound- like hearing the noise of an alarm clock.

Now, remagine another time that a child may have been not only startled to attention but is scared by a lasting or repeating sound. In this case, the child may seek a familiar re-assurance. So, imagine a time that a child was not only startled but actually frightened, then the child discontinues all other activities and focuses on the possible security of a familiar guardian– maybe an older child, maybe a familiar adult, or maybe even a familiar pet.

The child may rely on their guardian to investigate the persistent sound and assess or even secure their safety. Perhaps the child was sleeping and awakes from a dream after hearing a sound that disturbs the attention of the child. Was the sound a real threat? Was the sound just an alarm clock that the child interpreted as something else? Or, is there no evidence of any sound- perhaps only the imagining of a sound in the dream that already just ended?

now. Curiosity may be very brief- like an unexpected sound that is quickly recognized as familiar and not interesting enough to keep one’s attention from settling directly back down to whatever prior focus had been already present. Or, curiosity may prompt a direct personal exploration- like moving closer to that sound, being attracted or aroused into action, exploring, wondering, being intrigued. However, the curiosity aroused may be so intense that one is scared- perhaps interrupting any talking or other sounds to listen closer without being heard one’s self. Perhaps in a dream, I might be a child who brings curiosity over to an associate or guardian and very quietly but energetically whispers, “did you just hear something? Do you know what that is? Can you make sure for me that it is safe?”

We may even bring curiosity to the sounding of our own words- to the most familiar voice that we hear in our own imagining. I can hear the sound of talking to myself- but other people may not hear those same words like I do- even if I write them down or repeat them out loud. Other people may hear them, but not know what I am signaling with those words. They might be unfamiliar with some of the words that I dreamember remagining, or they might not understand my accent or pronunciation, or they might not speak my language at all, or they might not even hear some or all of the sounds I make.

Some words may frighten other people- that is one possible result, right? That result may even be the intended effect.

Some words may arouse and attract curiosity and exploration or other actions. Examples of that include advertisements, classroom instruction and statements within a lawsuit. In fact, virtually all communication is knowingly intended to produce some specific type of result in some specific person or group of people.

The intended result may be fear or exploration. The actual result may be fear or exploration or both or neither. Communication can prompt people to concentrate their attention towards a particular familiar guardian, appealing to them to provide clarity or security or curiosity.

For instance, a child may dream of a financial development that is unexpected. Perhaps a coin is found on the ground- or noticed to be missing from a pocket, or a job is lost or offered, a wage rate is changed, a company or industry grows or contracts, a lawsuit is filed or concluded, or the price of an investment goes up or down faster or further than considered possible (or at least beyond what is considered favorable by a certain someone). That dreaming child may then focus more on certain sources of information and instruction- like TV or radio or magazines or websites or businesses or workshops that focus on the interesting subject matter in ways that fit with the interests of that dreaming child.

Perhaps the child wishes to be frightened- whether or not the perceived threat is relevant or real. Perhaps the child wishes to be reassured- whether or not the perceived safety is actual and stable. Or, perhaps the child wishes to speak with someone who was not surprised at all- or someone who was perhaps however surprised but is (or seems) familiar with and understands exactly what options are relevant relative to a particular financial or economic development.

If the dreaming child wishes to understand a development that they do not understand- that they are curious or even frightened about- they may go to whoever seems to them like a fitting guardian or assistant. For instance, they may focus on a group or individual politician that offers them communications that provide them the result of whatever immediate experience the dreaming child favors: the perception of safety, the perception of danger, or a clear perception of whatever is present- no matter what- and the opportunity to explore what, of all possible focuses of attention, is most relevant to a certain person with certain values at a certain time.

Further, a certain child may dream of a certain ecological, social, or political development. Perhaps there may be a threatening health or safety issue like a contagious poison or a possible war on drugged terrorist peace-keepers or even an alteration of planetary temperature trends for a few particular planets in a particular region of space-time. Any of the possible realities can be emphasized- and in a variety of ways.

Again, a communication may be designed- consciously or unconsciously- to produce a redirection of attention away from anything else and towards whatever issue of special importance may be offered. Focus on this celebrity’s healthy relationship or that unhappy politician’s sex life- or on this business opportunity or that one. Experience fear or experience calm. Experience curiosity or experience clarity or experience delusion.

Here is a possible threat: weapons of mass distraction or avian bird fowls. Here is a certain solution: wear this hat or take this pill or buy this DVD or vote for this opinion in the internet poll and then forward it to all you friends except that one obviously.

Communication always involves an intentional influence of attention- however conscious that intention may be now or ever. Focus on this or that certain possibility- about this or that possibly certain person- to get exactly the experience that you are having whenever you do this.

She is a victimized sex goddess. Therefore, he must be a villainous airplane-shaped cloud of confusion. God is a loving punisher of those falsely accused of forgiving hypocrisy. I am a heroic savior clown, so pay attention to me- specifically in THIS way that you are now. A dreaming child that can suddenly have already woke up.

You are now… a dreaming child that can suddenly have already woke up. You are now exactly whoever you may be already unless you are not quite yet… certain of who is possible.

You do know what curiosity is, right? Sure, but what is “choosing curiosity?”
