lyrics: nothing (less than anything)

“When I am only as I am
then I must have been only as I must have been
Now I could be only as I could be
if I could have been nothing less than anything”

Hey, stop with the nonsense
and talk straight
or just say nothing
you’ve made my head ache

You feel the aching
and that’s new
You say I did it
to you
Now, if you believe
in your own words
notice: isn’t that when
your head hurts?

So, when I was a child
I would sleep
and dream of finding gifts
under a tree
then when I awoke
the presents appeared
suddenly
as if they weren’t already here

So, you felt some aching
and that was new
and then you had some thoughts
about who did this to you.
But was the feeling already under the tree?
Some worship words, discard the gift and keep the wrapping

Question: “do storytellers always teach in parables?”
Answer: perhaps only when they’re speaking to the arrogant

Your confusion was not that you don’t know
it was that you knew things that just ain’t so

“When I am only as I am
then I must have been only as I must have been
Now I could be only as I could be
if I could have been nothing less than anything”
