lyrics: condemn naught

condemn naught (throwing a pearl to swine)

I met a teacher
but I was slow to learn
I read the preaching
but I was quick to turn
a cure into finger-pointing
a blessing into a curse
I was a proudly naive listener
the lesson was a pearl
but I was swine

you really should not be so… yeah
I wish that you would be… you know
you really should be more or
less
different than I’ve ever thought you were before

condemn no other
for a flaw that you see
remove the blinders
that lead to accusing
forgive them of your blame
and your blame’s forgiven
accuse them of a sin
and suffer your own accusation
just like I’ve done

I really should not be so… yeah
you wish that I would be… I know
I really should be more or
less
different than you’ve ever thought I was before

now I see what’s wrong with us
at least the way it seems to me
I know what must be done
to fix the problem out there in the mirror
so I reached out for the glass
but the reflection copied me
I dragged a comb across the surface
but my hair was still all messy
what kind of sick god is to blame for this mirror

god really should not be so… yeah
I wish that god would be… you know
god really should be more or
less
different than I’ve ever thought god was before

you know if this is how
you’ve been making life hell
not just for others but
also for your own self

it’s not really so new
we’re not all that unique
though I know very well
that can be how it seems
if you like, believe it

life really should not be so… yeah
we wish that life would be… you know
life really should be more or
less
different than we’ve ever thought life was before

we met a teacher
but we were slow to learn
we quote the preaching
but are we quick to turn
a cure into finger-pointing
a blessing into a curse
we’ve been proudly naive listeners
the lesson was a pearl
but we were swine
(snort snort)

“If anyone hears my words and doesn’t follow them, I don’t condemn them. For I did not come to judge the world….”

(John 12:47)
