audio: “one last thing” (how to try to stop agonizing)

I’ve tried to stop thinking      about you
I’ve tried to stop thinking      about exactly how to
get you off my mind         at least just this one last time
if it’s the last thing           I’ll ever do
I’ve tried to stop singing   but these words keep on bringing
me back to the next verse and that familiar old tune
this could be the last thing     I’ll ever do

I could keep on pretending    that this life’s not for me
but just what other life                is here for me to lead?
I could keep on defending     my past obsessions
but they have no future at all at least not without me

I could try to start thinking    about you
I could try to start thinking    about exactly how to
get you back on my mind     at least just one more time
it won’t be the last thing        I’ll try not to do

The idea that you should be some particular way, like only a particular kind of someone, is a great curse leading to agonizing and suffering, but it is also a very silly mistake once recognized clearly. Of course you are exactly however you are. Of course society influences us to be less of certain ways and more of certain ways- to be “someone” good, as in someone conforming to social standards. Be no one. In other words, be no one else than who and what you are already are. Let the activity of striving to become someone else go. Let it come back, too. It is just the coming and going of striving. Do not strive to end striving. That is agonizing. Recognize agonizing and do something else- or just relax and do nothing in particular. Do not agonize over how to stop agonizing. Do not read a book about how to stop reading books. Do not sit in a chair to figure out how to stop sitting in a chair. Be no one. Be any one. Be some one. Be every one. Stop being. Start being. Be being.
