The one-eyed king
some people say            what should just be            and then act like             that must be happening

some people claim            what should not be             and then act like             this can’t be happening

it shouldn’t be raining       that light shouldn’t have been red           that cop shouldn’t be writing me a ticket       I shouldn’t just be glad I’m not dead
it must be what should be        it can’t be what shouldn’t be
I feel like that one-eyed king    ruling the land of the blind         no one sees the world I see     they see whatever they’ve been trained to define
we teach lies in church            we teach lies in school    we teach lies through media   and call it the truth
I know it shouldn’t be this way       we taught you that too     you know it couldn’t be this way    that perception is what we rule
it must be what should be        it can’t be what shouldn’t be
the economy shouldn’t be how it is  which can only mean that it isn’t           the market trend shouldn’t be how it is    which can only mean that it isn’t
the government shouldn’t be how it is  which can only mean that it isn’t          propaganda shouldn’t be how it is  which can only mean that it isn’t
reverse psychology shouldn’t be so ironic  which can only mean that it isn’t       anti-gravity shouldn’t be how it is  which can only mean that it isn’t
biochemistry shouldn’t be how it is  which can only mean that it isn’t             anthropology shouldn’t be how it is  which can only mean that it isn’t

it must be what should be        it can’t be what shouldn’t be

      When you say students, I presume you are a teacher. So, reading back over my lyrics, I MEANT to parody the idea that the scientific principles of biochemistry should not be what they are, but I think of being a student and complaining about how teachers and classes and tests should not be how they are: “Mrs. Terry should not be so hard. My academic classes should be more like gym. My art teacher should be more like that other art teacher.”
