As political campaign season advances, I notice how much “anti-opposition” sentiment is coming across my computer screen here. Republican supporters get riled up about opposing Obama and then Obama supporters get riled up about opposing Republican politicians who get riled up against Obama.
I think this marks a new extreme in the unison choir all singing “the opposition is just so incredibly horrible” with the bipartisan choir of Republicans and Democrats doing a call and response thing: R: “the opposition is so horrible.” D: “Yes, how can they be so horrible?” R: “We’ve never see something so horrible” D: “We agree it is just horrible.” R: “Yes, they are just so negative” D: “Yes, so horribly negative.”
9 years ago, myself and many others predicted these kinds of dynamics (which mimic the dynamics of Japanese politics in the 1990s) as we predicted the continuing global economic shift and the natural corresponding shift in political climate along with that predictable shift in economic climate. Will the US keep following the path of Japan since 1989… or is something new possible, perhaps in learning from their example?
